In this landscape without trees
a man is foolish to be upright,
should move on his belly
and have a second eyelid.


In such a place one casts
beyond oneself to arise, say,
in god’s image, or a demon’s,
something the grit-laden wind cannot harm–


casts beyond oneself, a small misery,
and easily forgets
how the water-girl huddled,
her back to the wind,
a child between her legs,


how a young boy lay patiently,
fingering first one stone, then another
